A vendor selling betel leaves in Chittoor near Palakkad in Kerala. Prices of betel leaves have soared, with a bunch of 50 leaves costing up to Rs 16 against Rs 7 during the same time last year.

Most of the supply to Kerala is met from Karur in Tamil Nadu, where heavy rains and frost have damaged the crop, leading to the price rise.
