AITUC calls for Vizag hills conservation

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Jan. 13

THE All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has criticised the policy of the State Government in allowing tourist resorts, IT parks and other projects such as film studios to come up on the hills and hillocks along the coast from here to Bheemunipatnam, "in violation of environment conservation laws and unmindful of the likely eco damage.''

In a statement issued here, Mr M. Ananda Rao, General Secretary, and Mr D. Adinarayana, President, said several housing projects, IT companies and Rama Naidu studio were being constructed on the hills and hillocks in the vicinity of Rushikonda.

``The Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority, the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) and the district administration are violating the Constitution and the Supreme Court orders on hill conservation. Some of the IT companies have already started levelling the land without obtaining any environmental clearance,'' they alleged.

They said it was high time the authorities initiated steps on a war footing to save Visakhapatnam from ecological disaster. They appealed to the public and intellectuals to take cognisance of the grave problem and put pressure on the Government on the issue.
