Govt to invite EoIs for five `ultra mega' thermal power projects

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 13

THE Government plans to invite expressions of interest (EoI) from global and domestic firms by the end of this month to build five `ultra-mega' thermal power projects, with a total installed capacity of 20,000 mega watts (MW).

According to official sources involved in the exercise, the pre-qualification bids were due by March 31 and the projects would be awarded by the year-end.

The Government, which is likely to give tax breaks and ensure an adequate supply of coal for all five thermal power plant projects, plans to invite private sector players for execution of these projects.

In order to kickstart the process, the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, today met the representatives of power firms and lending institutions.

The Chairman of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises, Mr Anil Ambani, the Chairman of Essar Group, Mr Shashi Ruia, the Executive Chairman of Vedanta Resources, Mr Anil Agarwal, and the Chairman of State Bank of India, Mr A.K. Purwar, were among those who attended the meeting.

"The Government has assured us that it has got in-principle clearance from the Coal Ministry for providing coal linkages," a private player said. Power Ministry officials said each of the five projects would have a capacity of 4,000 MW.

Two of the projects will be located near coalmines, while three plants will rely on imported coal. Out of the five projects, two will be set up in Gujarat and one in Maharashtra, while Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will get a project each. According to officials, no company will be allowed to execute more than one project.
