Bajaj Auto Q3 net up 53 pc on higher sales

BAJAJ Auto Ltd has reported a turnover of Rs 2,100 crore for the quarter ended December 2005 compared with Rs 1,605.67 crore posted in Q3 of 2004-05, an increase by 25 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

The third quarter gross profit stood at Rs 460 crore, registering an increase of 42 per cent and the net profit stood at Rs 280.05 crore against the Rs 182.66 crore earned in the corresponding period last year, up by 53 per cent.

According to an official statement, the company has recorded an operating EBITDA margin of 18.1 per cent as against 15.1 per cent in Q3 of 2004-05 and profit from operations stood at Rs 310 crore (Rs 190 crore in the corresponding period last year), an increase of 65 per cent.

In the two-wheeler segment, motorcycles recorded sales of 5,11,106 (4,41,355) during the quarter, registering an increase of 16 per cent. For the nine-month period the sales stood at 1,379,206 (1,053,566), up 31 per cent.

The three-wheeler sales stood at 57,572 vehicles (49,501) recording a growth of 16 per cent.

Exports of 64,359 vehicles had taken place as against 42,141 vehicles of the previous year, an increase of 53 per cent.

According to the statement, Bajaj Pulsar twins had crossed cumulative sales of one million units in November 2005 and the cumulative sales of Bajaj Auto since inception had crossed 25 million units in October 2005. The market share of motorcycles had improved from 27.8 per cent in FY2004-05 to 30.2 per cent in the first nine months of the current fiscal, it added.

The upgrade of Bajaj CT 100 was launched nationally during the quarter and over 2,70,000 units were sold . The Avenger, which was launched in June 2005, had seen sales of 6,600 bikes during the quarter.

The release stated that the motorcycle capacity was being expanded to 2,50,000 per month by March 2006 to meet the growing demand.

Three-wheelers continued its dominance with market share of over 80 per cent and its sales for the quarter grew by 16 per cent. Sales of three-wheeler passenger autorickshaw were buoyant due to the ongoing replacement programme to CNG vehicles in certain markets.

Bajaj Auto had announced a voluntary retirement scheme for its workers at its Akurdi unit and 334 workmen have opted for it. It involved a payout of Rs 2.16 crore. A sum of Rs 1.08 crore has been charged off in the current quarter and the balance will be charged in Q4 of 2005-06, the release stated.
