Fish workers' plea for soft loans

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Jan. 15

THE National Fishworkers' Forum (NFF) has urged the Government to extend soft loans to fishermen at 6 per cent interest rate.

Addressing presspersons here, Fr Thomas Kocherry, leader of NFF, said small fishermen, who have been facing various problems, will be benefited by such a move.

Opposing the move of the Government to privatise ports and harbours in the country, he said the Government should develop them. The Government should conduct dredging in fishing harbours. This will help fishermen to utilise harbours throughout the year, he said.

Fr Kocherry also urged the Government to set up a Disaster Prevention and Management Authority. The authority, which should be a statutory body, should be autonomous one.

The Government should ban the import of fish and other agricultural products, he added.
