Marwari society to launch management, tech institute

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Jan. 16

CALL it a makeover for the 76-year old Marwari Balika Vidyalaya Society (MBVS). Being one of Kolkata's oldest organisations of its kind, the society is promoting a multi-disciplinary institute linked with overseas colleges.

MBVS, which has lined up a Rs 50-crore kitty for the project, will offer technology and management courses to students at its newly-proposed campus, a few kilometres from Kolkata.

The society, indicated Mr S.K. Birla, one of the trustees, will try to put together a good faculty for graduate and post-graduate students. It will also tie up with international institutions.

The society has identified a 15-acre plot in Bishnupur near Kolkata for the project. It will be funded by contributions from philanthropists and well-wishers. Funds generated by the society will also be used.

The institute will provide courses in the emerging areas of technology and management. There will be an affiliation with the appropriate university as per the governing guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education. Subjects such as electronics, computers, chemicals and business administration will be taught. MBVS is already consulting senior educationists to select the courses. In all respects, including the curriculum, faculty, linkages and administrative structure, the society will be guided by eminent personalities, its Board of Trustees and the Project Advisory Committee, Mr Birla said. The other trustees include Mr B.M. Khaitan and Mr G.P. Goenka, while Mr R.N. Jhunjhunwala is the President.
