Climate & Weather Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Fall in mercury, fog forecast in North Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , Jan 17 THE latest in the series of western disturbances to cross into the northwest of the country has induced a `low' to its southwest over northwest Pakistan, which is expected to cause scattered to widespread snowfall and rain in the impacted region. These systems have caused fairly widespread rain/snow over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and scattered rain/thundershowers over the plains of Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan. The enhanced precipitation activity is likely to continue for another 24 hours with decrease in intensity for the subsequent two days. However, northwest India is likely to experience another wet spell from Friday. Night temperatures are likely to fall by about three to four degree Celsius over northwest India during the next two days as the systems propagate to the east-northeast making the way clear for cold, dense and sinking air. Foggy conditions are predicted to develop over the plains. However, the situation will be reversed with the expected approach of a successor system. An update from the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) on Tuesday said the prevailing system was located over north Pakistan, adjoining Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The induced cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan, too, persisted. Both the systems are likely to move slowly in an east-northeast direction, which means the plains will continue to be largely unaffected. Precipitation will mainly be confined to the immediate vicinity (north Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana including Chandigarh and Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh) during the next two days. The hilly regions of northwest India (Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal) will receive scattered to fairly widespread snowfall during the period. This is the second instance during this season of a western disturbance having induced a `low', riding piggyback on moisture feed from the Arabian Sea waters to the southwest. The NCMRWF has predicted that a fresh western disturbance is likely to approach Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining parts of northwest India by Friday. Under its influence, renewed spell of snowfall and rain are expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and the adjoining plains of Punjab, Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh for three days from Friday. In the South, the `low' over the western parts of southeast Arabian Sea that brought rains to the southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala has become less marked on Tuesday.
