Education Number of Indian students in US varsities goes up 6.9 pc Our Bureau
Chennai , Jan. 17 THE number of Indian students in American universities in 2005 went up by 6.9 per cent over 2004, according to Fr Dr Timothy R. Lannon, President, Saint Joseph's University (Society of Jesus), Philadelphia. This despite an overall 2.9 per cent decrease in international students studying in America over the previous year, which Fr Lannon attributes to the increased international safety regulations. Fr Lannon was addressing a gathering on the occasion of Saint Joseph's University signing MoUs with Loyola College (Chennai), Stella Maris College (Chennai), Arul Anandar College (Madurai), Xavier Institute of Management (Mumbai) and Xavier's College (Ahmedabad). He said that the academic collaborations between them would increase the higher education opportunities for Indian students at Saint Joseph's, Philadelphia. The academic collaboration would involve activities such as joint degree programmes, joint research initiatives and faculty and student exchange programmes between them. Saint Joseph's plans to launch joint programmes in health administration, education, biological sciences and computer science. Moreover, the university is launching the `SJU Philadelphia Study Tour Program' in April 2006 for undergraduate students across India. The programme will give eight students the chance to visit Saint Joseph's to attend summer courses in the areas of business, arts and sciences. The courses will be two six-week sessions. The students will be chosen on the basis of an all-India essay competition, with the top student winning an all-expenses paid trip, and the second winning a full tuition fee waiver as well as a stay scholarship.
