`Energy conservation vital'

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: India spends 3.8 times more energy in a unit production when compared to Japan and 1.4 times when compared to the US and 1.5 times the world average, according to Mr A. Vazeerullah, officiating Asset Manager, Rajahmundry, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.

Speaking at the `Oil & Gas Conservation Fortnight-2006' organised by the Asset in Rajahmundry on Monday, he said the effort was to spread the message of energy conservation among general public.

Mr Vazeerullah said, "disciplined handling of our petroleum products would mean 70 per cent of indigenous production will be sufficient to meet the country's requirement. The problem becomes more alarming when we consider the prediction that by 2020 we will be importing about 90 per cent of petroleum products.''
