Infrastructure Move to expand HUDA jurisdiction Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 17 THE State Government is toying with the idea of expanding the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) by setting up a Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority to meet the needs of the fast growing city. The proposal was mooted at a review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Monday. It was proposed that HMDA could cover 54 mandals with a total area of 6,852 sq. km, including the Cantonment area, in five districts. It would encompass Hyderabad district (all 16 mandals), 10 mandals in Medak district; 22 in Rangareddy district, two in Mahboobnagar and four in Nalgonda district. Hyderabad metro with four urban development authorities and Cantonment covers 2,197 sq. km. The population of the State capital would increase to 78 lakh from 65 lakh, if the HDMA proposal turned out to be a reality. The Chief Minister has asked the officials to chalk out plans to provide world-class infrastructure and take measures to increase the authority's revenues. Directing them to confiscate all illegal properties and deal with illegal layouts in municipal areas and Panchayat jurisdictions, he said there was a need for a separate tribunal to keep tabs on illegal constructions. The officials said a three-tier structure was proposed for good governance of HMDA, which is similar to other metro authorities of India like Kolkota (KMDA), Delhi (DDA), Chennai (CMDA), Bangalore (BDA & BMRDA), Mumbai (MMRDA).
