`Distance courses will not do for physiotherapy'

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Jan. 17

THE Indian Association of Physiotherapists has urged the Government not to allow distance education programmes in physiotherapy courses.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Dr U.T. Ifthikar Ali, convenor of the Mangalore branch of the association, said the continuation of distance education programmes in physiotherapy would pose as a "public health hazard."

Terming physiotherapy practice as a skill-based profession, he said that over 60 per cent of the four-year training course was spent in acquiring skills. Physiotherapy includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation.

Stressing the need for a regulatory body for physiotherapy education, Dr Rajesh Kumar, executive committee member of the Mangalore branch, said there has been a cancerous growth of sub-standard colleges. There is a need to have legislation in Karnataka for controlling the education and practice of physiotherapy.
