Cable operators seek transparency in pay channel pricing

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Jan. 18

CABLE operators have sought transparency in the pricing of pay channels and have asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to ensure a level-playing field among the various stakeholders in the broadcast industry.

In an open-house discussion with TRAI officials in Mumbai, the operators said that revenue accruing to them in the value chain was minuscule. In comparison, broadcasters earn from advertisements on channels as well as from subscription, they said.

"Let the consumer get a break-up of how the revenue is shared between the broadcasters, multi-system operators and local cable operators," a cable operator said at the meeting.

The last mile operators are actually left with no margins, the operators said. They also urged TRAI not to allow any more pay channels.

The issues that were taken up for discussion included the proposal for amendment to the Tariff Order and whether the existing tariff order should be amended to indicate benchmarks which can be used for determining similarity in the rates of new pay channels.
