Letters Fetters on IIMs
It is not a clever move by the Government to not allow the IIMs to set up campus in Singapore. An international campus would have provided a golden opportunity to further IIMs' global image. But by refusing permission, India has shown its short-sightedness. By opening a branch overseas, IIMs can only benefit. Bal Govind Bareilly ***
I fully support the decision of HRD Ministry to refuse IIMB permission to open a campus abroad. While these IIMs are hesitating to open new campuses in India, or increase the intake of students, they seem over-enthusiastic about opening campuses abroad. Could it be lust for money? If they are short of faculty in India, will they not have the same problem abroad? Only one per cent of those who appear for CAT get into the IIMs. There is an urgent need to open at least one IIM in every State. If IIMB is allowed to open its campus in Singapore, all other IIMs will line up with same request. S. K. Jain Dehradun ***
The Government's refusal to allow IIM Bangalore to set up a campus in Singapore has raised extreme reactions throughout the country. While many foreign educational institutions and universities are allowed in India, why should our institutions be denied the benefit of going abroad? It is also an interference in the autonomy of the IIMs. Going abroad could only be a gain and not loss. The IIMs should attain global standards and establishing campuses abroad can only help to achieve it. The opportunity should be well utilised. In the context of globalisation, the benefits that may accrue, the Government should revise its decision. A. Jacob Sahayam Thiruvananthapuram
