A farmer irrigating his land in preparation for the next crop in Muthra near Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu. Irrigation consumes about three fourths of the available water in the country.

The share of water for agriculture is expected to decline from the current level of 85 per cent to 71 per cent by 2025. India leads in the area under irrigation in the world with nearly 55 million hectares of land depending on water.
