Cold spell to extend for another day, fog forecast

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 20

MERCURY has dropped by two to four degrees Celsius in the north and the northwest during the last 24 hours ending Friday morning in tandem with the eastward movement of the existing western disturbance.

An India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast said minimum temperatures might fall by another degree or two during the next 24 hours.

The movement of the westerly system away from Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas has lead to a significant decrease in the snowfall activity as well, an update from the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) said on Friday.

Dr Akhilesh Gupta of the NCMRWF said that the earlier forecast made about the arrival of a fresh western disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal was being deferred by another day to Sunday.

This will mean that prevailing lower temperature climes will extend for another 24 hours, Dr Gupta said, concurring with the outlook of the IMD. They will not lift until the warmer front-end of the approaching system impacts the region.

Temperatures are expected to record a rise of two to three degree Celsius once the fresh system crosses in from across the international border. The system is also expected to cause scattered snowfall/rains over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh for three days from Sunday.

The NCMRWF forecast also maintained its outlook for foggy conditions during the early morning hours in the plains for three days from Sunday.

Towards the east of the country, mainly dry weather is expected to prevail with morning and evening fog, particularly over parts of east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and the Northeastern States.

Mainly dry weather is likely to prevail in the South during the next four to five days, with the seasonal anti-cyclone sitting pretty.
