Our Bureau

Pune , Jan. 23

`ONE stop shop' pharmacy for HIV/AIDS infected people, the first of its kind in the country, was inaugurated in Pune on Monday.

TAAL, a concept of providing care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS, has been conceptualised by Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd in association with the United National Development Programme and Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS.

Talking to newspersons, Mr A.K. Khanna, Director, Operations, Emcure Pharmaceuticals, said Taal is the first of its kind pharmacy partnership initiative in Asia Pacific to expand access to treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS. He said it is being run by people living with HIV/AIDS.

He said talks are also on to set up such units in Nepal and Cambodia too. He said TAAL would dispense the antiretroviral drugs and drugs for opportunistic infections and would be available at subsidised costs for people living with the disease in and around Pune to begin with.

He said plans are also on to begin such outfits at Namakkal in Tamil Nadu and Surat in Gujarat within three months. He said it would also have counselling services and would have two doctors in the pharmacy for consultations. Mr Khanna said the outfit has currently been donated drugs free of cost, which is expected to generate revenue that would be utilised for further supplementing the drugs.

He said about 7 per cent of the revenue is expected to come from the sales of antiretroviral drugs. Mr Khanna noted that there are more than five million HIV infected people in India, making it the second on the global map. Of this, about eight lakh people require the antiretroviral drug on an immediate basis.
