Cultivation Gujarat heading for record rabi crop Dhimant Bhatt
Mumbai , Jan. 23 GUJARAT may be heading for a record rabi crop this year. The Department of Agriculture, Gujarat, set a target of 30 lakh hectares (ha) for the rabi season 2005-06. Of this, the total area in the State covered so far is an all time 27.24 lakh hectares (ha), up five lakh ha compared with previous season's 22.10 lakh ha. "The total area has increased considerably this season, thanks to good rainfall and proper management of rainwater harvesting in all the districts," an official of the department told Business Line. Major crops include wheat, sugarcane, rapeseed/mustard, pulses, jeera, jowar, maize and onion. Total area under major rabi crops are: 8.29 lakh ha (6.41 lh last season) of wheat (irrigated); 3.38 lakh ha (3.23 lh) of rapeseed/mustard; 2.39 lakh ha (1.72 lh) of jeera; 1.97 lakh ha (1.62 lh) of sugarcane; 1.66 lakh ha (1.35 lh) of chana; 75,600 ha (44,800 ha) of onion; 62,600 lakh ha (57,800 ha) of jowar and 38,500 ha (50,800 ha) of maize.
