Centre upgrades Kochi MMD office to district level

Kochi , Jan. 25

FOR the benefit of the maritime community in Kerala, the Union Government has upgraded the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) office in Kochi to district level office.

Mr G.S. Sahni, Director-General of Shipping, is to inaugurate the district level office here on Thursday.

With the increase of shipping activities at Cochin Port Trust, the role of MMD assumes importance. At present, after inspection of ships, the reports are to be forwarded to the Principal Officer, MMD, Chennai for issue of certificates, which often causes delays and hardships to the shipping industry.

By upgrading MMD Kochi to district level, such delays can be avoided and necessary statutory certificates can be issued from here itself.
