Chennai , Jan. 25

TUTICORIN Container Terminal (TCT) has handled 3,20,300 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) for the full year 2005, which is a nine per cent growth year-on-year.

Since PSA SICAL Terminals Ltd began operating TCT in 2000 the terminal had registered an annual growth of 16.5 per cent, according to information available in the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), Singapore, Web site.

Shipping lines benefited from the addition of a third quay crane in 2005 as average port stay of container vessels have decreased to 12 hours last year from an average of 15 hours in 2004.

Further, the doubling of yard space to 10 hectares and the number of yard cranes to eight improved the servicing time for trucks entering and leaving the container yard. Last year, 65 per cent of trucks left the terminal within 30 minutes of entry, up from 57 per cent in 2004.

Shippers also benefited from the start of two new services to Jebel Ali in the West Asia and to Singapore/Port Klang.

With the direct mainline service to Europe by the Norasia/Zim/Gold Star/China Shipping consortium, South India shippers get the best ocean connectivity at TCT, says the PSA Web site.
