New Products & Services Info-Tech - Hardware AMD Live! PCs to hit market soon Preethi J.
Bangalore , Jan. 27 LIVE! PCs by chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will soon take care of the entire digital home entertainment needs. With the new Live! PCs, parents could watch a movie in the living room, while children listen to music or play an online game in their rooms. This is what the company calls moving from a two-foot to 10-foot (anywhere inside the home) experience. Branded as the AMD `Live!' editions, these PCs will rely on dual-core chips (means more processing power, hence faster response) and 64-bit architecture. The 64-bit dual core Athlon X2 processors, released by AMD in mid-2005, will power the new PCs. They will run on Microsoft's new 64-bit operating system, Vista and include Mediacentre software, which helps time-shift serials by storing on a hard disk. "This configuration will ensure enhanced TV viewing by combining what a PC can do with the TV's functions," said Mr Mukund Ramaratnam, Director - Marketing, AMD India. Live! will be available in the form of notebooks too. There will also be a slew of new designs of PCs, said Mr Ramaratnam. "The PC might even resemble a set-top box, a box which will handle all your digital lifestyle needs," he said. AMD initially launched Live! on workstations in 2004 to help digital content creators. The PCs will offer 7.1 surround sound and advanced graphics capability with partnerships with ATI, nVidia and Broadcom. AMD `Live!' will invade homes mid-2006 and will be priced higher than average desktop PCs and the Mediacentre PC. Mr Ramaratnam said that the PCs would be available from leading OEMs and PC assemblers across the country.
