ICAI plans e-learning facility for members

Mangalore , Jan. 27

THE Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), which has taken initiatives to promote e-learning among CA students, is planning to extend the facility to its members soon.

Mr G. Ramaswamy, Member of the Central Council of ICAI, told Business Line here that e-learning facility has been made available to students through Reliance Webworlds.

"We want to extend it to the members of ICAI soon," he said. Students can download the course material from ICAI's Web site and appear for virtual classes through Reliance Webworlds, he said.

Mr Ramaswamy was in Mangalore to inaugurate a two-day national seminar on `Accounting practices: An interactive dialogue with professionals', organised by the Mangalore branch of ICAI and St Aloysius College.

Asked about the proposal to restructure the CA course, he said there is a move to shorten the duration of the course. The Council, which has ratified the proposal to shorten the duration of the course from 60 months to 42 months, has sent it to the Union Government for approval.

Under the new format, gaining entry to the course will be difficult, but passing out will be easier. Students can take common proficiency test after their `plus two' education. The successful candidates can join as an article clerk under a practising CA. During specified duration of time, these students will have to appear for intermediary and final examinations, he said. Under this, 250 hours of computer education is compulsory for students.
