Floriculture Not too rosy prospects K.K. Mustafah
A scene from a rose nursery in Thrissur district. Flower exports from South India have recorded a 30 to 40 per cent drop due to adverse weather conditions and steep hike in freight charges. Damage to roses by heavy rains has reduced availability in the local market, pushing up prices to Rs 4-5 a stem, which was just Rs 1.50 to 2 last November. High prices in domestic markets have created a dilemma among exporters. While Christmas and New Year were a mixed bag, growers pin hopes on Valentine's Day to make up for the losses.
