Jail term for gutka baron

THE Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Court on Friday sentenced gutka baron, Mr Rasiklal Dhariwal, owner of the Manikchand Group, and one distributor, Mr Ramnath Dayama, to one-year simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000.

According to Mr S.R. Yadav of the Health Department, Pune, Mr Dilip Karanjkhar, a health inspector, in 1997 had bought a gutka packet and later sent it to the laboratory for testing. It was found to contain magnesium carbonate, not permitted in gutka. The case was filed in 1999. Mr Rasiklal would be filing an appeal in the High Court of Mumbai, sources said.
