Health `India, UK must go in for closer health ties' Deepak Goel
New Delhi , Jan 29 THE FICCI plans to initiate a dialogue process with the healthcare industry of the UK in order to facilitate the movement of equipment, personnel and research work in the healthcare sector between India and the UK. The healthcare working group meeting, coordinated by the FICCI at the upcoming Indo-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting, would see the participation of representatives from the healthcare industry from both thecountries. The meeting would discuss issues related to quality parameters in both countries for hospitals and laboratories. It would also address issues such as standardisation and accreditation of medical processes and academic institutions, to ensure superior quality care, said the FICCI Secretary-General, Dr Amit Mitra. While the JETCO would be led by the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, the Indian healthcare working group, organised by the FICCI, would be represented by Fortis and Apollo Hospitals among others. Highlighting possible opportunities for collaboration between the two countries, Dr Mitra said, "India is destined to be the clinical research hub of the world. Given the pool of qualified medical professionals and its strength in IT, India is in a position to meet the healthcare infrastructure requirements of the UK." Ayurveda and alternative medicines are also attracting a lot of medical tourists to India but these tourists are not able to claim medical insurance money in their respective countries, according to Dr Mitra. The Indian delegation would impress upon the healthcare industry in the UK to recognise and approve these as also the medical courses and trainings provided in India, said Dr Mitra.
