Now, management course for bureaucrats

Deepak Goel

New Delhi , Jan. 29

THE Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, is launching a 15-month residential management programme exclusively for joint secretaries in the Government from July.

The annual intake for the programme would be a minimum of 35, going up to 50, depending upon the number of nominations by the Government. "The minimum qualification for the programme would be graduation and the college would also have screening tests and interviews for the aspirants, if the number of nominations exceeds 50," Prof. Ashok Kapoor, Chairman, Corporate Communications, MDI, said.

The Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management is being launched to enhance the management skills of public servants, said Prof. Kapoor. The programme also includes a three-month visit to a public policy school in Europe or North America. On completion of the course, the students would be awarded an MBA degree.

The business school has tied up with the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for the programme. However, the course would be run by the B-school independently. MDI is finalising the fee structure for the course, which could be Rs 3 lakh. It is also starting a two-year full time management programme for international students in association with ESCP-EAP, a French management college.

Established by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris, the French college has several campuses across Europe. Admission to this programme would be based on GMAT or CAT scores, followed by a group discussion and an interview. "We would initially take 10-15 students annually and increase the intake later," said Prof Kapoor. The classes will be held in both India and Europe, he said.

MDI was established in 1973 to provide only research, consulting and short term training programmes. It started its 15-month National Management Programme (NMP-Executive PGDBM) in 1988 and its two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management in 1992. The institute also runs the Fellow Programme in Management besides the part-time Executive Management Programme. MDI is one the largest colleges to conduct continuing education programmes (1-3 weeks executive workshops), according to an All India Management Association survey.
