Hyderabad , Jan. 29 AKASH, the surface-to-air weapon system, can now intercept and hit multiple enemy targets. Defence scientists have demonstrated this capability by successfully hitting two flying objects. Two missiles, fitted with warheads were used in the test, which was done around 12.30 p.m. at the Interim Test Range (ITR), Chandipur in Orissa. Announcing this, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said the Akash weapon system was now ready for production clearance. In trial flight against the pilotless target aircraft `Lakshya', it was shown that targets at a range of 20 km and altitude of 5 km, flying at speeds of 550 kmph and in close proximity could be intercepted and hit. The success marks, yet another technology step forward for India. Its missiles have the wherewithal to intercept and handle live flying multi-targets. The country also joins a select band of nations with this capability, Mr Prahlada, Chief Controller (R&D), DRDO said. The test flight was conducted with the user participation. The flight experiment was also witnessed by representatives of Army, Air Force and Integrated Defence staff, along with senior scientists of DRDO. The test flights also established the effectiveness of surveillance radars, control functions, mobile launchers and the multi-function phased array weapon control radar (Rajendra). While the missiles used were made by Bharat Dynamics Ltd here, the `Lakshya' has been developed by the DRDO and produced by Hindustan Aeronautics. The Akash missile system, with a range of around 25 km, has undergone several tests. It will continue trials with the users and is expected to be inducted into the forces during the year, DRDO said.
