Climate & Weather Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Cold wave in central India likely to abate Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 29 COLD wave conditions have continued to prevail over parts of Marathawada and Telangana in the aftermath of the seasonal anti-cyclone having shifted south from its normal position. Parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Orissa, and north interior Karnataka also have been experiencing cold wave conditions, which are expected to continue to prevail for another 24 hours. Predictions by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) suggest that the high-pressure area associated with the anti-cyclone may already have started heading back to the north, promising to bring predominant easterlies into play. The warm and moist easterlies are expected to lead to a rise in both day and night temperatures by about three to four degrees C over most parts of central and northwest India during the next few days. This may help abate cold wave conditions from these areas to a great extent. Meanwhile, Saturday's western disturbance continues to persist over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining hilly regions. With this eastward movement of the system, the ongoing snowfall/rainfall activity over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal is likely to reduce in the next 24 hours. The western disturbance had induced an upper air cyclonic circulation (not amounting to a `low') to form over west Rajasthan. This was what had brought scattered to fairly widespread snowfall/ rainfall activity over the three neighbouring States areas and isolated rains over adjoining Punjab and Haryana. In region-wise forecasts for the next 24 hours, the NCMRWF said scattered to fairly widespread snowfall/rains are likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Scattered rainfall/snowfall has been forecast for Uttaranchal, too. Thereafter, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are likely to receive scattered snowfall/rains on Wednesday and Thursday. In the south, mainly dry weather has been except for the entire region except Kerala where isolated rains are likely during the next 24 hours. South coastal Tamil Nadu is likely to be brought under some rain activity on Wednesday and Thursday under the influence of a passing easterly wave.
