BIS programme on hallmarking for jewellers

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Jan. 30

THE Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will conduct an awareness programme on hallmarking scheme for jewellers, in Mangalore on February 10.

A BIS press release said here on Monday that the Union Government had decided to make hallmarking mandatory for all jewellers with effect from January 1, 2008.

As many manufacturers, traders and retailers of gold jewellery are operating in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, the awareness programme will apprise the jewellers of the salient features of the hallmarking scheme so that they can prepare themselves to meet the mandatory requirements of hallmarking. Senior officials from BIS headquarters in New Delhi will address the jewellers, the release said.

The BIS launched hallmarking scheme as a voluntary scheme in April 2000. More than 1,000 jewellers are operating the scheme in the country, the release added.
