BIRLA Corporation Ltd, the flagship company of the M P Birla Group, reported a 189 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 17.22 crore in the third quarter of the current fiscal, up from Rs 5.95 crore in the same period the previous year, according to a company press release.

Net sales during the period increased by 9.41 per cent to Rs 333.6 crore (Rs 304.90 crore) and profit before tax for the nine month period ended December 31, 2005 amounted to Rs 74.33 crore (Rs 52.24 crore).

The new 27-MW thermal plant at Satna (M.P) was put to use during the quarter and this plant, along with the another 27MW plant at Chanderia (Rajasthan), helped the company reduce power cost, said the press release.
