New Delhi , Jan. 31

CONSUMER electronics major Samsung India has said it expects its colour television sales to grow by 20 per cent to 1.8 million units in 2006 and will focus on high-end products such as flat screen, plasma and LCD TV sets to capture higher market share.

"We sold 1.5 million colour TV sets last year and aim to sell 1.8 million sets this year. Flat TV sales have jumped 100 per cent in 2005 and we will increase focus on this segment,'' the Samsung India Deputy Managing Director, Mr Ravinder Zutshi, said on Tuesday.

The company, which introduced six flat panel television models on Tuesday, plans to sell one-lakh units of plasma and LCD sets in 2006 from 10,000 units last year.

The six new models range from 20 inch to 46 inch and are priced between Rs 44,990 and Rs 3,99,000.

This would increase the company's market share in the category to 50 per cent from 33 per cent at present, he said, adding flat panel sets would contribute about five per cent of the total television sales.

In the flat TV segment, the company plans to increase its market share to 30 per cent this year from 22.5 per cent last year. It sold 1.2 million flat TV sets in 2005.

"We would also begin production of slim-fit TV sets at the Noida facility by the end of February," Mr Zutshi said.

The company has invested $12.5 million in research and development last year and would invest more in research activities this year, he said.

Samsung is also aiming to garner a market share of 20 per cent in refrigerators, 26 per cent in microwave ovens and 28 per cent in air-conditioners by the end of 2006.
