Letters Leather exports
This is with reference to, "Leather product exports top $1.4 b in April-Oct," (Business Line, January 25). Leather comes at a heavy price, a price that readers will not find listed on any garment or shoe tag. While the Indian leather industry has set itself a goal to cross the $2.6-billion mark, it will cost millions of cattle and other animals their life. In spite of repeated appeals, the Indian leather industry refuses to check unlawful slaughter practices and the transport of animals in conditions so hellacious that many animals end up mangled, before they reach the abattoir. Some animals are forcibly marched to slaughter, and have chilli or tobacco smeared into their eyes to keep them from moving, when they collapse from exhaustion or injury. Sowmya Reddy
