Kochi , Jan. 31 THE Union Minister of State for IT and Communications, Dr Shakeel Ahmed, has stressed the need to bridge the digital gap amongst various countries to raise the tele-density to respectable levels within a timeframe. Such an approach would give meaning and direction to the goals enunciated in the Millennium Declaration, he said while inaugurating the first Pan-Commonwealth Conference tilted "Connecting Rural Communities 2006" here at the Hotel Le Meridien on Monday. To achieve this, he said special attention need to be given to upgrading and extending telecom services to rural, remote areas in the least developed countries and developing countries through international cooperation and support. Mr Ekwow Spio Garbarah, CEO of Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation, said that India had made rapid strides in the area of IT and telecommunications. Creating a communication highway would definitely provide the impetus to growth, he said. With rapid projected developments in South East Asia, there has never been a more crucial time to learn new strategies and models for rural communications within the rapidly changing information and communication (ICT) industry, he added.
