Concor rationalises freight rates for Nepal-bound containers

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Feb. 1

THE Container Corporation of India (Concor) has rationalised freight rates in respect of transportation of Nepal-bound containers imported through the Kolkata port i.e. both the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC).

At a time when the Indian Railways has hiked freight rates by nearly 15 per cent on an average, Concor, with effect from January 15, effected a hike of 6 per cent per FEU (forty-ft container) and 10 per cent per TEU (twenty ft container) on the KDS-Birugunj (Nepal) route, according to Concor sources. On the HDC-Birgunj sector, the rates have been increased by 7 per cent (per FEU) and 8 per cent (per TEU).

Sources said that for light goods there has been a drop in freight — Rs 16,136 per TEU for loadability up to 15 tonnes and Rs 17,636 per TEU for more than 15 tonnes against the earlier flat rate of Rs 17,736 per TEU irrespective of loadability. Similar revisions have been effected for imports through HDC too.

Meanwhile, the throughput on the KDS-Birgunj route too is showing an upward trend.

The average throughput per rake has increased to 70 TEUs so far this year from 65 TEUs last year. Also, Concor handled the 100th rake on the route on January 31 compared to 74 rakes handled in 2004-05.

Three of the rakes handled so far moved on the HDC-Birgunj sector, said the sources.
