Tourism CII bid to promote tourism Our Correspondent
Madurai , Feb. 1 THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has taken up an action plan with the Government of Tamil Nadu to promote tourism in the State as it believed in adding value to the development efforts in the State, Mr T.T. Ashok, CII Chairman, Social Development Subcommittee, South Region and Immediate Past Chairman, CII, Tamil Nadu, has said here. Inaugurating a two-day conference-cum-exposition on the investment opportunities in the tourism sector to promote and showcase Madurai as the `Gateway to heritage and culture' organised by CII, Madurai Zone, he said last year CII took the initiative to come out with a survey report on the industrialisation of the southern districts. Just as Kerala is promoted as `God's own country' and Malaysia as `Truly Asia', there is a need to develop Madurai as a brand to harness the rich potential in the region to promote tourism. Traditional tourist spots such as Jaipur and Jodhpur are yielding place to Goa and Kerala as they are aggressively marketed. There is a need for all the stakeholders to join hands to find opportunities for the purpose and take advantage of the electronic media, Web sites, trade fairs and exhibitions, road shows in big cities in the country and abroad. Tie-up with major trade bodies, arrangement of chartered flights, promotion of a combination of ethnic, pilgrimage and health tourism and cultural shows as the music season in Chennai and the dance festival at Chidambaram could pave the way.
