Negative list for BIMSTEC FTA being fine-tuned

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 1

THE Commerce Ministry said the negative list for the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with BIMSTEC countries is being re-finalised.

However, the July 1 deadline for the implementation of the FTA would be met, said Mr Rajeet Mitter, Joint Secretary in the Commerce Ministry

"The fine-tuning of negative lists are going on to accommodate trade interests of all the BIMSTEC countries," he said.

Inaugurating a seminar on BIMST-EC-Business Opportunities, organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India , Mr Mitter said BIMSTEC FTA is more comprehensive than SAFTA as it includes negotiations on services as well as investment.

The BIMSTEC FTA would cover only products, but after 2007, services and investment would also be included.
