RITES prepares report on rail link for Tata, Posco mines

Kolkata , Feb. 2

RAIL India Technical & Economic Services (RITES) will prepare feasibility reports on rail infrastructure for the steel plants being set up by Tata Steel in Orissa, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh, and by Posco, the Korean steel giant, in Orissa.

While the report on Tata Steel's Kalinga Nagar plant is almost complete, the work on reports for its plants in other States has just begun. The report on the Posco plant is expected to be ready by May, according to RITES sources.

When ready the reports would be sent to the Indian Railways for in-principle approval. Work on detailed project reports will start once the approvals have been obtained.

RITES has already prepared a concept paper for Posco, as the foreign company is less familiar with the ground realities.

The RITES feasibility studies will focus on rail connectivity from the mines to the plants. For the Kalinga Nagar plant, the Tatas will source the mineral from Nayagarh area. However, Posco's sourcing areas are yet to be finalised. The likely areas are Nayagarh and Barbil, it is learnt.

The rail route from the mines to Tata Steel's Kalinga Nagar plant was likely to be about 150 km long, while Posco's plant could be 270-280 km away, it is learnt.

The Tatas have identified Dhamra port (awaiting construction) for the import of raw material and export of finished products to and from its Kalinga Nagar plant but the present feasibility study by RITES will not cover the railroad connectivity proposed on the 60-km stretch between Bhadrak and the port. This report will be prepared by Dhamra Port Company, a joint venture between Tata Steel and L&T.
