GSM players' ARPU higher than CDMAs'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 2

THE GSM-based cellular operators seem to be making more money than their CDMA counterparts.

According to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) during the quarter ended September 2005 for GSM mobile operators was Rs 374. The CDMA operators had an ARPU of Rs 244. However, the average minutes of usage per subscriber per month during the period is the same at Rs 367 for both, which indicate that CDMA may be offering cheaper tariffs.

On an all-India basis, TRAI said that ARPU in the case of post-paid subscribers was much higher compared to pre-paid customers. The Revenue Per Minute (RPM) was also higher for GSM operators at Rs 1.02 in comparison to 52 paise accruing to CDMA operators.
