Tamil Nadu Logistics - Human Resources Aiming for the sky G. Gurumurthy
The Tirupur-based Park group of institutions has aligned with the Malaysia-based Link Aerospace Ltd to promote an aviation academy in Coimbatore. The joint venture intends to train human resources needed for the aviation industry like commercial pilots and aeronautical maintenance engineers and is to be set up with an investment of Rs 50 crore. "The proposed aviation academy will be a separate business entity. The Park Academy of Aviation will partner with Link Aerospace Ltd in the 50:50 venture," said r R.V. Ravi, the group Chairman. The Park group, which runs educational institutions including an engineering college, will provide the required infrastructure and faculty for the `Aerospace Academy'. The academy would be located at the Park College of Engineering at Kaniyur near Coimbatore. The project has roped in as partner the Bangalore-based Group Aviation, a human resource consultancy firm, which would act as the placement wing for the students passing out. "Our Malaysian partner preferred to have the academy in India, considering the dearth of trained aviation personnel faced by the booming aviation industry. The existence of the Coimbatore and Salem airports with ample airspace availability was a clinching factor for the promoters to locate the aviation training centre in Coimbatore," said Ravi. There is also the option of utilising the Salem airport for training purposes, considering that there is hardly any activity there. "For night trainee-sorties, we can use the facilities at the Coimbatore airport, which is now very busy during the day," he added. He added the proposed academy would start by March 2006 with 100 trainees for the commercial pilot course and 20 for aeronautical maintenance engineering. The process of securing the necessary clearance from the Director General of Civil Aviation and the Airport Authority of India is on. The Park College of Engineering is already offering graduate and post-graduate degree courses in aeronautical engineering and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Bangalore, trains its trainee engineers here.
