Sparring session

C. Ratheesh Kumar

Bengal tigers frolic in a pond in their enclosure at the Thiruvananthapuram zoo. A count of this most endangered species in the Indian forests is currently on amidst reports about increasing threats it is facing due to poaching and habitat loss.

Less than 4,000 tigers were left in the wild as per the last tiger census conducted three years ago, down from nearly 40,000 at the time of Independence.
