Telecommunications Government - Politics Govt discusses phone tapping issues with cellular firms Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb 3 THE Union Home Ministry today held a meeting with cellular operators and senior officials from the Department of Telecom to discuss issues related to phone tapping. The move follows the recent controversy that erupted after several politicians alleged that some individuals were tapping their phone using Reliance Infocomm's telecom network. According to sources, the Government is likely to come out with guidelines that will specify the procedures to be followed when a phone has to be tapped for security reasons. The meeting was chaired by the Union Home Secretary, Mr V.K. Duggal. Mr J.S. Sarma, Secretary, Department of Telecom, Mr L. Narasimhan, Director, Intelligence Bureau, and Mr K.K. Paul, the Delhi Police Commissioner, were present. Top executives from cellular companies including Mr Rajan Mittal, Joint Managing Director of Bharti Airtel, and Mr T.V. Ramachandran, Director-General of Cellular Operators Association of India, attended the meeting.
