`Start importing natural rubber through STC'

Chennai , Feb. 5

THE All-India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA), a body of small and medium industries, has urged the Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, to discontinue export of natural rubber and import 20,000 of the commodity through the State Trading Corporation (STC).

In a letter to the Minister, the association's northern region Chairman, Mr Mohinder Gupta, said the current rise in rubber prices has hit the small and medium industries hard. "The small-scale industries are unable to fulfil their export obligations in view of the steep rise in rubber prices," he said.

Prices for RSS-4 during the week quoted at Rs 82 a kg in Kochi and Kottayam.

Stating that rubber imported by STC should be sold to small industries at rates quoted in Kottayam, Mr Gupta said the imports should be duty-free.

He also called for suspending the Rs 1.50 a kg cess for rubber in view of the high prices.
