Bus fare hike likely in AP

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government has given the go-ahead to the public sector bus carrier to increase fares for wiping out losses.

The State Government issued orders on Friday authorising the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) to hike bus fares to cope with increasing oil prices.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr Gone Prakash Rao, Chairman of the corporation, and Mr M. Krishna Rao, Managing Director, did not mention when the hike would be implemented.

The board of directors of the corporation will meet this month to decide on this issue. For the nine months ending December 31, 2005, the corporation registered operational losses of Rs 38 crore as against Rs 240 crore for the whole of 2004-05, Mr Krishna Rao said.
