Beyond Davos

India having been bracketed with China as one of the emerging Asian economies, the strong Indian-Davos team has every reason to be satisfied. But back home, they have to look at `The reality beyond Davos' as explained in the editorial (Business Line, February 1).

And we have to look beyond mere GDP numbers. Extreme poverty, hunger, health, illiteracy etc are still pressing problems. In this context, the call of the newly-inducted Congress minister, Mr Jairam Ramesh, that `Foreign trade should serve the common man' is relevant.

He has rightly pointed out that in a country where agriculture remains the mainstay of economic activity of millions of people, any strategy that bypasses this segment will result in lopsided development.

Adequate food for all, health for all and education for all children, are achievable without delay, if there is a will.
