The vessel is to be designed and built as a single screw diesel engine driven bulk carrier for unrestricted worldwide service.

Kochi , Feb. 6

THE keel for the third bulk carrier for the Clipper Group of Bahamas was laid at the building dock of Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

The yard is currently constructing six bulk carriers for the Clipper Group, and the first of the series, the Bossclip Trader, is complete and due for delivery on schedule in March.

The second ship is being launched this month and is to be delivered by August .

Mr D.D. Ingty, Commissioner of Customs Kochi, laid the keel for the latest in the bulk carrier series in the presence of Mr Satish Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Customs.

The contract with the Clipper Group was concluded in February 2004 with firm orders for four ships.

The initial contract was later amended and enhanced to six vessels. The keel laying signals the critical stage in the construction of the ship.

The vessel is to be designed and built as a single screw diesel engine driven bulk carrier for unrestricted worldwide service.

The vessel is to comply with the requirements of Type B ships defined by the International Convention of Load Lines. It is meant to carry dry bulk and break bulk cargoes such as grain, metal concentrates, iron ore, scrap metal, coal, bauxite, salt and sugar, as well as products like pipes, steel, coils and plates.

The vessel is being built as per the highest requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping, a release said.

Apart from the bulk carriers, the shipyard recently delivered six fire-fighting tugs and is now constructing three more for ATCO for the Jeddah Port Authorities, Saudi Arabia.

The yard is also constructing eight platform supply vessels for Seatankers Management, Norway.
