Spices export continues to decline

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Feb. 6

THOUGH exports of spices have shown a declining trend during the first nine months of the current fiscal, shipments of some items have gone up substantially during the period.

Exports of chilli have declined during April-December this fiscal compared with shipments during the same period a year ago. Though exports crossed the target of 75,000 tonnes and stood at 86,750 tonnes valued at Rs 298.10 crore, they were below 1,07,681 tonnes valued at Rs 394.55 crore shipped during the year-ago period.

Other items that have shown significant growth include turmeric, garlic, other spices, curry powder and spices oils and oleoresins.

Total exports during April-December stood at 2,44,666 tonnes valued at Rs 1,676.01 crore as against 2,62,067 tonnes worth Rs 1,728.18 crore in the same period last year. There has been a fall of 17,401 tonnes in volume and Rs 52.17 crore in value.

Increased availability from other origins at competitive prices is pointed out as the reason for the decline.

Exports of garlic have gone up to a historic level of 21,000 tonnes valued at Rs 24.57 crore from a meagre 1,168 tonnes worth Rs 3.67 crore during the same period last year. Poor crop in other producing countries coupled with increased demand from overseas especially from neighbouring countries has pushed up its export, Spices Board sources told Business Line.

Turmeric shipments also crossed 37,500 tonnes valued at Rs 122.92 crore as against 34,202 tonnes valued at Rs 125.99 crore.

In turmeric, India continued to maintain the monopoly in terms of the quality of the commodity and in total world output, they said.

Value-added products such as spice oils and oleoresins and curry powder have shown an upward trend. Pepper and cardamom both small and large also moved this fiscal.
