Wheat import move lauded

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Roller Flour Mills Association has welcomed the Centre's decision to allow duty-free import of five lakh tonnes of wheat.

In a letter to the Union Food and Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, the association's President, Mr V.K. Gupta, said the decision would help the flour mills in the South, which were badly affected due to lack of stocks and high prices.

It would also help to bring out stocks that had been hoarded by a few unscrupulous elements.

He also urged Mr Pawar to allow duty-free import of another five lakh tonnes to ensure sustained supply of raw materials for the mills.
