Roadways APSRTC hikes fares Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Feb 6 TRAVELLING in buses run by the public sector carrier will be costlier from Wednesday. Wasting no time after the State Government gave it permission to hike fares recently, the AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has decided to increase the fares, which would fetch an additional Rs 200 crore annually. Passengers in major cities, however, have been spared. Also, there is no change in minimum fare, fare for the first three stages and for the first 15 km. Also spared are pass holders like students, senior citizens, and non-gazetted officers. The hike would effect all the five categories - Ordinary, Express, Luxury, Hi-Tech and Volvo. The proposed increases are - three paise (a km) on Ordinary and Express services; five paise on Hi-Tech; and 10 paise on Volvo services. After the hike, the per km fare would go up to 38 paise for Ordinary, 44 paise for Express, 49 paise for Luxury, 57 paise for Hi-Tech, and Rs 1 for Volvo services. Speaking to reporters after an extraordinary board meeting on Monday, Mr Gone Prakash Rao, Chairman, hoped that the hike would bail out the corporation and help it achieve break-even. The last hike was effected in February 2003. Since then, the price of high-speed diesel has gone up to Rs 34.01 a litre from Rs 22.42. This has resulted in an increase in the oil bill from Rs 964.06 crore to Rs 1,462.43 crore.
