Mumbai , Feb. 6

ADITYA Jyot Eye Hospital has forged an alliance with Chennai's Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM) for retinal stem cell research.

NCRM, which is headquartered in Japan, signed a memorandum of understanding with Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital on Monday, a note from the hospital said. Stem cells offer possibilities for treatment in different applications such as eye care. Fifty per cent of all blindness is caused by damage to the retina, diabetic retinopathy being a major cause.

Almost 10 million people worldwide are blind as a result of age-related muscular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, the note added.
