Events Replicate Taiwan model, say experts Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Feb. 6 WITH an emphasis on innovation, technology experts at a Nasscom event on captive units have called for new approaches to take on global competition. The Managing Director of e4e Labs India, Dr. Sridhar Mitta, said mere replication of successful global models would not be sufficient to stay ahead, as Indian captive technology centres need to bring in innovative practices and bring down overall costs. Speaking at a meet hosted by Nasscom on `Captive India Development Centres (IDCs)-Proven strategies to address challenges', Dr Mitta, said, "We can take a leaf out of what Taiwan has managed to do so with its hardware industry. From a low-cost assembler, it has managed to become one of the biggest PC component makers in the world and in effect makes everything except the processor. This it achieved collectively as small units worked towards a common goal. We can explore how we can replicate this model in the case of India IT companies." The Director of Microsoft India, Mr Rajiv Kumar, said, "It is relatively easier to recruit a beginner and a global senior tech pro rather then finding someone in the four to 10 year experience category ." The Managing Director of SumTotal, Mr Sudheer Koneru, said, "Though the company started with a cost equation in mind, cost alone cannot be a consideration, when handling the sensitive issue of R&D." The Vice-President of CA India Technology Centre, Mr Manmohan Jain, said talent acquisition was a big challenge. The head of Quality Engineering group, Yahoo India, Mr P.S. Ravindernath, said "Since Yahoo provides interface for both technology-challenged and tech savvy users, we have taken to partnership route to meet the requirements.''
