Sikkim annual Plan size fixed at Rs 550 cr

New Delhi , Feb 7

THE annual Plan size of Sikkim for the next fiscal has been fixed at Rs 550 crore, inclusive of one-time Central assistance of Rs 20 crore for projects of special priority to the State.

At a meeting with the State Chief Minister, Mr Pawan Chamling, the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, said that the Plan panel was conscious of the infrastructure constraints of the State and would bolster efforts to improve it, particularly relating to tourism.

It was pointed out that allocation of funds towards special component plan and tribal sub-plan should be clearly demarcated; the State has been asked to review the expenditure pattern in the agriculture sector with greater emphasis on animal husbandry and horticulture.

Mr Chamling said that in the next fiscal, the State Government intends to focus attention on accelerating growth in tourism, floriculture, and horticulture.

Infrastructure development in rural areas has been taken up on a priority basis and efforts are on to encourage private participation in tourism and organic farming.

The Chief Minister pleaded for extension of East-West corridors of the national highway development project to Sikkim and sought construction of an alternative highway to ensure free and regular movement of traffic in this important border State of the country.
